CHP accident reports

Here are the latest vehicle accident reports, as provided by the Willows area office of the California Highway Patrol.

Monday, April 26:

12:15 a.m., Todd Nakata, 66, of Duvall, Wash., was driving a 2003 Buick south on Interstate 5, north of Wilson Creek, in the slow lane at about 70 miles per hour, when he fell asleep. The Buick traveled to the right, went across the west shoulder of southbound I-5, and entered a dirt and gravel area. Nakata awoke, applied his brakes, and turned the Buick sharply to the left. The vehicle rotated counterclockwise and traveled in a southeasterly direction. The Buick traveled back across the west shoulder of southbound I-5. As the vehicle began to enter the slow lane, Nakata turned the Buick sharply to the right. The Buick began to rotate clockwise back in a southwesterly direction. The vehicle traveled back across the west shoulder, entered a dirt and gravel area west of southbound I-5 and then traveled down a small embankment. As the Buick got to the bottom of the embankment, the front of the vehicle struck the bottom of the embankment. The Buick came to rest on its wheels, facing a northwesterly direction. According to CHP Officer Gilliam, Nakata was wearing his seat belts at the time of the accident and was not injured.

Wednesday, April 28:

5:15 a.m., Jesus Jimenez, 21, of Orland, was driving a 2003 Toyota east on Highway 32, east of County Road N, at 40 to 45 miles per hour. Rosa Diaz, 31, of Orland, was driving a 2008 Toyota east on Highway 32 at 55 to 60 miles per hour and was overtaking the 2003 Toyota. Diaz looked down to adjust the volume on her stereo and when she looked up she realized she was overtaking Jimenez’s Toyota. As Diaz applied her brakes, the front of her vehicle struck the rear of Jimenez’s Toyota. Diaz’s Toyota came to rest on the south shoulder of Highway 32, facing an easterly direction. Jimenez’s Toyota traveled in a northeasterly direction, across the westbound lane of Highway 32, and came to rest on the north shoulder of Highway 32, facing an easterly direction. According to CHP Officer Henriques, Jimenez was not injured. Diaz was transported with minor injuries to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.
