‘Vehicle fire’ on Highway 32

Glenn County Observer

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, Dec. 14, Orland firefighters were dispatched to a report of a “vehicle fire” on Highway 32, near County Road P.

A minute or two later, the call became a little more specific: It was reported that it was a “semi fire.”

Then a responder said that it was the trailer that was on fire.

The semi was traveling west on Highway 32 when, unbeknownst to the driver, his brake on the trailer partially locked up.

As the vehicle approached County Road P, the brake area caught fire. The driver pulled over to the north shoulder.

Fortunately, the driver had a fire extinguisher and was able to put out the fire.

When firefighters arrived, they hosed down the trailer to cool off the brakes.

A half-hour or 45 minutes later, the firefighters were able to head back to the station.

“Maxwell must go free!”

This lyric from the Beatles’ “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” came to mind as this caption was being written. Why, you ask? Because this wonderful kitty’s name is Maxwell. If you are interested in adopting this fine feline, call (530) 517-1754 to arrange to see him in person. The Town and Country Humane Society shelter is located on Highway 99 between County Roads 21 and 23, south of Orland. It is a nonprofit run by volunteers committed to the idea of making life better for our furry friends. Glenn County Observer photo by Larry Judkins.

Hector Octavio Salazar DeGonzales, 34

Glenn County Observer

A felon is in custody following a raid on a property east of Orland on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Members of the Glenn Investigations and Narcotics Task Force (GLINTF), along with a Glenn County District Attorney investigator and other officers, began planning the action after being made aware of complaints of illicit drug sales occurring at a residence located in a rural area east of the City of Orland.

The residence is located near the intersection of County Roads RR and 15, not far south of Highway 32.

Agents contacted several people, including Hector Octavio Salazar DeGonzales, 34, Victoria Gutierrez Alcarez, 38, and one other young adult residing at that location.

During the investigation, agents found the following items:

425.1 grams (about 15 ounces) of methamphetamine;

21.3 grams (about three-fourths of an ounce) of heroin;

20 pounds of processed marijuana;

two rifles;

one handgun;

one 50-round .45 caliber high-capacity magazine;

three stolen trucks;

four stolen motorcycles; and

one stolen U-Haul trailer.

GLINTF agents seized all of the illegal contraband, weapons, and stolen items.

At about 6:30 p.m., Hector Octavio Salazar DeGonzales, a mechanic, was booked into the Glenn County Jail on charges alleging possession of firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, possession of a controlled substance for sale, vehicle theft, and possession of known stolen property (all felonies).

His bail was set at $60,000.

He was taken into custody at 4368 County Road RR, Orland, by a Glenn County Sheriff’s deputy.

The other two residents were released from the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed with the Glenn County District Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation.

Orland police officers arrived on scene and began rendering medical aid. The man was determined to have a pulse but remained unresponsive. He was given three doses of Narcan. A BestWhip whipped cream dispenser with a CO2 cartridge was found in the bathroom. Westside Ambulance and Orland fire volunteers responded and the man was ultimately transported to Glenn Medical Center. Deputies collected the whipped cream dispenser and CO2 cartridge, which were later booked into GCSO Evidence in Willows for destruction. [Editor’s Note: Whip-Its usually involve whipped cream dispensers and N2O2 (a.k.a. nitrous oxide or laughing gas) cartridges rather than CO2 cartridges. I am not suggesting the sheriff’s office was wrong about what kind of cartridge was found. I am just saying a CO2 cartridge wouldn’t produce the effect that most people who do Whip-Its look for.]

The deputy contacted Cisneros, who, after reviewing her security video, said Colima-Pineda had entered her unlocked Kia SUV at about 2:18 a.m., before attempting to get into the residence and ringing the doorbell. Cisneros declined to pursue a criminal complaint. Help the animal shelter with DIY tree ornaments

Support the Town and Country Humane Society by making a really cool-looking tree ornament, or two. The do-it-yourself personalized ornament fundraiser is planned for Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., up until Christmas. Everything needed to make the ornaments will be available at the animal shelter. A shelter worker will take and print photos for the ornament, which supporters of the shelter will then be able to decorate with glitter. The ornaments can then be taken home. The cost is $5 for one ornament, or $8 for two. Cash only. The Town and Country Humane Society shelter is located on Highway 99 between County Roads 21 and 23, south of Orland. It is a nonprofit run by volunteers committed to the idea of making life better for our furry friends. Glenn County Observer photo by Larry Judkins.

Somehow, the driver of an Infiniti involved in a violent rollover was able to walk away, despite the car being completely totaled.

Few details are presently known. Orland firefighters were dispatched to the scene at about 10:23 Monday morning.

Initially, the call was said to be a vehicle versus trailer collision. This was soon corrected to a single-vehicle rollover accident.

The Infiniti was traveling east on County Road 19, just east of County Road 200, when the accident occurred. According to the CHP’s traffic incident page, the driver may have been speeding.

The driver was reportedly able to exit the Infiniti by himself. It is not known if he was wearing his seatbelts at the time of the accident, but the car’s airbags deployed.

The driver was transported by ground ambulance for medical aid.
