Loutinea Elizabeth Niehues, 90

Loutinea Elizabeth Niehues died at her home near Willows on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The fourth of seven children, she was born in Loleta to John and Frances Leonardo on May 13, 1931.

She grew up in the Ferndale area. Her family moved to Glenn County in 1945, establishing a dairy in the Bayliss area.

Known by most as simply “Louie,” she attended and graduated from Willows High School. She met and married Alphonse Niehues and they had eight children: Allen (Teresa), Donna Bassetti (Stino), Anthony (Evelyn), Barbara Leach (Tim), Lynette Carroll (Steve), Gregory (Connie), Michael (Janet) and John (Lorie).

Her family became her life’s work. She loved her children, and she was blessed with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.

She loved to cook and her hospitality to her family and guests was always 5-Star quality. She was a devoted member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church and the Young Ladies Institute (YLI).

Over the years, she volunteered countless hours to the convalescent home, blood bank, thrift shop, and her church.

She is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Mendes and Dolores Amaro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al; sisters Frances Mendes, and Mary McArdle; and brothers John and Frank Leonardo.

A Rosary is to be recited and a Catholic Mass is to be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, with a graveside service to follow at the Catholic cemetery. Following the graveside, a reception is planned at the parish’s McGoldrick Hall. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to donate in Louie’s name, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Monica YLI, the Bayliss Volunteer Fire Department, or St. Monica’s church flower fund.
