More information is now known regarding the March 8 two-vehicle crash on the Stony Creek bridge on Highway 99, just south of County Road 9.

According to the Willows office of the California Highway Patrol, at about 5:24 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, an unknown person was driving a 2008 Dodge south on Highway 99, south of Road 9, at an unknown speed.

Celso Salgado Farias, 48, of Orland, was driving a 2006 BMW north on Highway 99, south of Road 9, also at an unknown speed.

For unknown reasons, the unknown driver allowed the Dodge to drift to the left and cross over the solid double yellow lines about two feet into the northbound lane, directly into the path of Farias and his BMW.

The left front of the Dodge struck the left front of the BMW. The BMW continued in a northwesterly direction, struck and traveled through the bridge’s guardrail, and fell about 30 feet to the dry creek bed below, where the vehicle came to rest on its left side.

The Dodge traveled in a southeasterly direction and the left side struck the bridge’s metal guardrail and came to rest with the left side of the vehicle wedged against the guardrail.

After the crash, the unknown driver fled on foot in an unknown direction. According to remarks heard on the police scanner, a sheriff’s deputy reported that a controlled substance was found in the Dodge.

According to CHP Officer Rodney Pozzi, Farias was transported with major injuries to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Farias was wearing his seatbelts at the time of the accident.

This hit and run is still under investigation.
