Update: CHP issues release on I-5 fatality

Glenn County Observer

On Friday, the Willows Area Office of the California Highway Patrol issued a news release concerning Wednesday’s fatal accident on Interstate 5.

According to CHP Officer Rodney Pozzi, at about 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, Tomas Juan Gaspar, 41, of Pixley, Calif., was driving his 2008 Cadillac SUV north on I-5, south of County Road 24, in the fast lane at an unknown speed.

For reasons that are still being investigated, Gaspar steered his vehicle to the left, into the gravel median of I-5, south of Road 24.

Gaspar steered his SUV back to the right, causing his vehicle to travel in a northeasterly direction, across the northbound lanes of the freeway.

As the Cadillac traveled onto the dirt and gravel shoulder of I-5, just north of County Road 24, the vehicle overturned several times in a northeasterly direction.

As the SUV was overturning, Gaspar was ejected from the vehicle. Gaspar and the vehicle came to rest on the east shoulder of I-5, north of Road 24.

Gaspar, who according to the CHP was not wearing his seatbelts, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident.

His passenger, Gloria Valdovinos, 34, of Pixley, was wearing her seatbelts and was not injured.

At this time, alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this accident.
