Another crash at P and 32

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

If Highway 32 and County Road P isn’t the most accident-prone intersection in Glenn County, what is?

At about 6:12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, emergency responders began heading to yet another collision at the intersection in question.

Details regarding how the accident occurred are currently unknown.

What little information that is known comes from police scanner chatter and the CHP traffic incident website.

According to the CHP’s traffic website, the vehicles involved were a Lexis and an Amazon Dodge delivery van.

On the scanner, the Corning fire dispatcher cancelled the response of the Orland Fire Department, saying that the incident was a non-injury accident.

Last month, Caltrans announced that $520,000 in State Highway Operations and Protection Program funds had been allocated for a traffic signal at Highway 32 and Road P.

Watch The Glenn County Observer for an update regarding this collision.

Success continues for WJH youth football and cheer organization

Glenn County Observer

The Willows Junior Honker youth football and cheer organization continues to be a success.

“We want to thank all of our youth football and cheer athletes for their hard work they put in throughout the season,” said WJH President Marisol Bobadilla. “We’d also like to thank the board members and coaches for volunteering to help the organization move forward positively and always being there to support our local youth.”

On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Willows Junior Honkers hosted the Sacramento National Athletic League Championship games. The excitement started with Las Plumas 8 and under Thunderbirds versus Central Valley Falcons 8 and under teams.

Las Plumas upset Central Valley and were crowned champions.

The 10 and under teams that competed for the championship were the Las Plumas Thunderbirds versus the Corning Lions. The Thunderbirds proved to be the better team and became champions.

The 12 and under face off was between the hard-hitting Gridley Titans versus the unified Corning Lions. In the end the Gridley Titans cruised to the championship.

In 2019, the Willows Junior Honkers transitioned from the Norcal Federation Football League to the Sacramento Youth Football League. With this change in league the Willows Junior Honkers organization board, led by President Marisol Bobadilla, were presented the opportunity to host the first championship game, where the 10U Willows Junior Honkers team played the Oroville Rhinos and unfortunately came up one play short of the championship game.

They lost on the last play of the game.

In 2021, this same team moved up to 12U and again they made the championship game but this time it was against an undefeated Paradise Bobcats, whom they had upset the previous year in order to make the 10U championship.

Willows came out strong and went into the half with a lead. The stunned Paradise Bobcats made an impressive comeback and ended up winning the championship.

Although Willows earned the respect of the Paradise coaches and players, since up until then, no team had challenged them that season.

This year, this same Willows Jr. Honkers team, now 14U, finished the regular season with a 6-2 record in the SYF National Athletic League. They qualified to make the playoffs and got the opportunity to avenge their two losses during their playoff run.

They defeated the Corning Lions in the first round of the Sacramento Youth Football playoffs. They then faced the Gridley Titans, who recently had defeated them in the regular season but this time Willows came out victorious and finally had the honor of being called champions.

Congratulations to the Willows Junior Honkers 14U football team on their championship. It’s been a long journey but, teamwork, discipline, determination and brotherhood were built along the way.

The WJH Head Coach is Juan Puente. Assistant coaches are Adam Neuhauer, Tony Arendt, Dan Blair, Pedro Bobadilla and Juvenal Sandoval.

“We would like to wish our 8th grade 14U cheer and football athletes a great remainder of their school year and will be excited to see them ‘under the lights’ next year,” said Marisol Bobadilla.

U.S. Forest Service officer arrested for DUI

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

A U.S. Forest Service officer was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence after she collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 on Friday, Nov. 4.

According to Officer Barone of the California Highway Patrol, at about 3:27 p.m., Chelisa Chemayne Rodriguez, 31, of Shasta Lake, was driving a 2019 Chevy Silverado south on Interstate 5, south of County Road 3, at a high rate of speed.

The Chevy driven by Rodriguez collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer. The force of the collision caused debris to cover both lanes of traffic.

The driver’s name and make of the tractor are not mentioned in the CHP’s news release.

After the impact, the Chevy turned to the right and came to rest off the roadway. The Chevy sustained major damage to its front end.

Southbound I-5 was reduced to one lane of traffic for about 90 minutes.

According to the CHP Traffic website, at 3:43 p.m., responders were warned of a firearm in “the vehicle.” Presumably, this vehicle was the Chevy, and the weapon belonged to Rodriguez.

Rodriguez sustained minor injuries in the collision and was transported to Glenn Medical Center for treatment. She was wearing her seatbelts at the time of the accident.

She was later booked into the Glenn County Jail on charges alleging driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and driving while under the influence of alcohol (both misdemeanors).

Her bail was set at $10,000.

Seatbelts save lives

One driver sustains only minor injuries, the other driver sustains no injuries at all.

Thank you, seatbelts.

According to Officer Forslund of the Willows Area Office of the California Highway Patrol, at about 12:05 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, Elias Santiz, 33, of Orland, was driving a 2004 Saturn four-door west on County Road 25 at about 45 miles per hour, east of County Road M.

Ramirez Quirarte, 36, of Orland, was driving a 2007 Ford Expedition south on Road M, directly north of the intersection with Road 25.

Santiz approached the stop sign at Road M but failed to stop at the limit line. He applied his brakes but traveled into the intersection.

The Expedition crashed into the right rear end of the Saturn.

With the involved 2004 Saturn nearby, Orland firefighters Daniel Carranza, left, and Zachary Webster chat at the accident scene. Glenn County Observer photo by Donna Wilder.

After the crash, the Expedition traveled to the right and rolled over in an orchard. It came to rest facing a northwesterly direction on its left (driver’s) side.

The Saturn was parked on the right shoulder in the orchard.

Neither driver was seriously injured. Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Neither driver was arrested.

Second update: GCSO releases more chase info

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

After The Observer published the update based upon the Glenn County Jail’s media release, the Glenn County Sheriff’s logs came out with additional information.

According to the log item for the event in question, at about 5:17 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, Deputy Goodwin observed a Chevy Silverado run off the roadway on Highway 99 near County Road 28 and collide with a barbed wire fence.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to yield, leading to a pursuit.

The driver ultimately “foot-bailed” on Highway 99, south of County Road 48.

After a search of the area, deputies were unable to locate the driver.

The vehicle was registered to Victor Cardenas of 159 Elm Street, Willows, and an investigation was initiated.

The vehicle was towed per California Vehicle Code section 14602.7(a).

Cardenas was contacted later in the day. He denied fleeing from law enforcement and claimed his vehicle was stolen.

Cardenas was ultimately arrested for various charges.

An “involved party” was named as Gabriela Ochoa-Serrano, 2477 Santa Rita Road, apt. #24, Pleasanton.
