Winds knock down power lines behind OPD

Glenn County Observer

As Orland firefighter (and former PG&E worker) Dave Kelly approaches, a PG&E employee in the background repairs the lines in the alley behand the Orland Police Department, Post Office, and City Hall Wednesday afternoon. Glenn County Observer photo by Larry Judkins.

Wednesday was a very windy day, and there were numerous calls of lines blown onto the ground around the county.

Most of these were phone and cable lines, but at least one line was an actual power line.

At about 3:30 p.m., Sgt. Sean Johnson of the Orland Police Department reported a line had fallen and it and a transformer were arcing in the alley behind the post office and police station.

Employees inside city hall reported the noise sounded like empty trash cans blowing around the alleyway.

The Orland Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene and access to the alley was blocked off.

One line could be seen resting on the roof of an outbuilding behind one of the residences on Third Street.

PG&E soon had the power in the area shut off and began repairing the problem.

The post office, of course, lost its power and its employees closed the blinds and locked the doors to the lobby.

Some customers, unaware of what was going on behind the post office, wondered why it had closed early.

They were made aware by other customers of the problem behind the post office.

The power problem was soon fixed.

Vehicles sustain major damage at M and 24 crash

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

No one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle traffic collision late Tuesday morning.

The vehicles themselves, on the other hand, are a different matter altogether.

They both sustained major damage.

At about 10:35 a.m. on August 17, emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of County Roads M and 24 for a two-vehicle collision.

Responses from ambulance personnel and the Orland Volunteer Fire Department were canceled when it was learned that neither driver was seriously injured.

Few details about the accident are presently known, but it appears that a Nissan was traveling west on Road 24, approaching the stop sign at Road M.

At the same time, a Chevy Tahoe was traveling south on Road M, approaching the intersection with Road 24.

There was no stop for the Tahoe.

The Observer does not know if the Nissan stopped at the stop sign or whether it stopped but then pulled into the intersection before it was safe to do so.

All that is known is that the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

The Nissan ended up in the north end of an irrigation ditch that runs along the west side of Road M, at the southwest corner of the intersection of M and 24.

The Tahoe came to rest at the edge of a driveway to a home at the southwest corner of the intersection.

The Chevy struck a post and another object at the east end of an irrigation ditch that runs along the south side of Road 24.

The airbags in both vehicles deployed.

The Nissan was equipped with airbags all around the interior of the car and they all deployed, while in the Tahoe only the driver’s airbag deployed.

The vehicles were removed from the scene by Bambauer Towing of Orland.
