Early morning high-speed/low-speed chase passes through county

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

An early Sunday morning pursuit that started out at well over 100 miles per hour slowed to a crawl after it reached Glenn County, then sped back up to about 50 miles an hour as it approached Butte County.

The driver’s slowing likely had something to do with a flat tire. A certain reporter who lives on Walker Street (Highway 32) in Orland was awakened by the police scanner chatter concerning the pursuit, then stepped out his front door when he heard the chase had gotten off the southbound Interstate 5 and had headed east on 32.

The reporter witnessed a silver car pass his home, followed closely by about a half-dozen law enforcement vehicles – all with lights flashing and sirens blaring ‑ from at least three agencies (California Highway Patrol, Glenn County Sheriff’s Office, and Orland Police Department). As the lead car went by, it was obvious from the noise it was making that at least one of its tires was almost flat.

At some point between Orland and the pumpkin patch (Country Pumpkins), the vehicle gradually slowed down and almost came to a stop. Then, the driver apparently had second thoughts and began accelerating again, but, probably because of his tire problem, never went much over 50 miles per hour.

After passing Country Pumpkins, the dispatcher told deputies the vehicle was a “10851 [stolen] out of Eureka.”

As the pursuit continued eastbound on Highway 32 toward Hamilton City, a sheriff’s deputy told the Glenn County dispatcher that the driver was “all over the roadway.” The driver and officers passed through Hamilton City at about 2:11 a.m.

A Glenn County Sheriff’s sergeant stated that he would be pulling his people out of the pursuit if it continued into Butte County. He asked the dispatcher to make sure that Butte County law enforcement was aware of this so that they would be ready to take over.

The chase did indeed continue into Butte County, and into Chico. At Meridian Road, at about 2:17 a.m., Glenn County Sheriff’s units pulled out of the pursuit and headed back to Glenn County, arriving there at about 2:21 a.m.

According to Joetta Ferguson’s comprehensive posting on the Redding Crime and Community Alert/Shasta County Facebook page, the chase began in Redding on East Cypress when the driver failed to yield to Redding police officers for a 10851 violation (vehicle theft). The driver and pursuing officers turned onto southbound Interstate 5, traveling at speeds ranging from 80 to 115 miles per hour.

They entered Tehama County at about 1:38 a.m., reaching speeds of up to 125 miles per hour. Fortunately, traffic was light at this early morning hour.

At about 1:41 a.m., the CHP took over the pursuit at Antelope Blvd. in Red Bluff. At some point, the CHP helicopter also became involved in the incident.

The driver began to yield in Chico at about 2:23 a.m. However, the suspect failed to comply with law enforcement’s commands made over their public address systems.

The suspect reportedly told the CHP in a cell phone call that he had a knife but had thrown it on the floorboard. Law enforcement officers removed the suspect from the vehicle at 2:29 a.m. and detained him a minute later.

Ferguson reported that at some point during the next 40 minutes or so, law enforcement agencies discussed who would handle this incident, since it took place in “3 counties” (actually, it was four: Shasta, Tehama, Glenn, and Butte) and the theft of the vehicle took place in a “fourth” county (actually, a fifth: Humboldt County).

Ferguson commented in her post, “It sounds like the Redding Police Department will manage it with Butte County adding their 148 (resisting arrest) charges into the case.”

According to Josey Bones and several other commentators on the Butte County Fires, Accidents, Crimes Facebook page, the pursuit came to an end on Nord Avenue, not far from West Sacramento Avenue. A couple of postings mentioned the CHP helicopter “hovering” and “spotlighting” the area.

Numerous posts referred to two very loud bangs – loud enough to set off car alarms – that were heard while law enforcement was taking the suspect into custody. Some thought that they were gunshots, but law enforcement reportedly said on their radios that they were fireworks, and one person remarked that someone in the area has a fireworks mortar, and fireworks in the area are a regular event.

This report will be updated when more information, such as the name of the suspect, is acquired.

Jailed accused killer allegedly found with shank

Stanley Scott Grundy

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

Stanley Scott Grundy, one of five men believed to be involved in the murder of Brandon Dawson in 2019, was on Monday allegedly found to be in possession of an “improvised weapon” while in the custody of the Glenn County Jail.

Dawson was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on March 8, 2019. On July 28, 2021, suspects Grundy and Clayton Shane Humphrey were arrested and booked into the Glenn County Jail, and two days later another suspect, John Cornelis Poldervaart, was taken into custody.

On August 24, 2021, the “fourth and final” suspect in the killing of Dawson was arrested. Lane Cleo Walker, Jr., was booked into the Glenn County Jail.

There was a fifth person believed to be involved in Dawson’s murder. However, Michael Paul Oliveira was himself murdered on July 29, 2019.

At about 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputy Sheldon was dispatched to investigate a report that an inmate in the jail was in possession of a possible weapon. After an investigation, it was learned inmate Stanley Scott Grundy was in possession of an “improvised weapon” while in the custody of the Glenn County Jail.

Jail Commander Lt. Justin Gibbs informed The Glenn County Observer during a brief telephone conversation on Tuesday, Nov. 2, that the “improvised weapon” was a “sharpened object,” or “shank.” Inmates in jails and prisons have been known to sharpen items ranging from toothbrushes to plastic kitchen cutlery into offensive or defensive weapons.

Lane Cleo Walker

The sheriff’s log item for this incident names Lane Cleo Walker as a “witness.” Walker is known to have been in the proximity of Grundy when the shank was found.

According to Lt. Gibbs, neither man is talking to members of the sheriff’s office. The investigation is continuing.

A report was forwarded to the Glenn County District Attorney’s Office, however.

At about 3:31 a.m. on Oct. 31, Orland police officers responded to the 1300 block of Brookside Drive in Orland for a report of shots fired. Officers arrived and contacted a 37-year-old woman with an apparent gunshot wound.

Witnesses reported several shots were fired into the residence at 1309 Brookside Drive. A resident on East Walker Street was awakened by five to seven shots.

Brookside Drive runs north and south, just south of the fairgrounds. Brookside is immediately to the east of Fairview Street, where the main entrances of both Fairview School and WestHaven Assisted Living are located.

At 3:35 a.m., volunteers with the Orland Fire Department began receiving messages regarding the incident.

Truck 29 announced that it was responding at 3:40 a.m., and it arrived at the scene at 3:43 a.m. Four minutes later, Truck 40 did the same.

Seconds later, Truck 29 said they were available and returning to the firehouse. Westside Ambulance, the Truck 29 volunteer said, was transporting one victim.

Also on board the ambulance was a firefighter who went along to assist the ambulance personnel. A volunteer from Truck 40 stated they were heading to Enloe to pick up the rider.

Due to heavy radio static, a law enforcement officer made a mostly unintelligible comment about finding “no vehicles” that may have recently left the area of the shooting. According to a press release from the Orland Police Department on Monday, Nov. 1, no suspects have been identified.

The OPD press release included very few new pieces of information regarding the shooting. Besides the fact that no suspects have been identified, it is now known that the shooting victim was a 37-year-old woman whose name has been withheld, and the suspects shot blindly into the inhabited house.

Not even the condition of the victim has been released.

At about 4:15 a.m., Orland Police Officer Ryan Martindale told the Glenn County Sheriff’s dispatcher that he was on his way to Enloe Medical Center, presumably to conduct interviews and/or collect evidence. Roughly 45 minutes later, Officer Martindale said he was returning to Orland.

According to the Orland Police Department, this investigation is ongoing and the department urges anybody with information about the incident to contact Sgt. Cessna at 530-865-1616.

Orland drive-by shooting sends one to hospital

By Larry Judkins

Glenn County Observer

An early Sunday morning drive-by shooting in southeast Orland resulted in one person being transported by ambulance to Enloe Medical Center in Chico.

The incident seemed to be foreshadowed by a report of possible gunshots around midnight in the general area of Woodward Avenue and Walker Street.

It was decided that the sounds heard were actually fireworks.

Then, around 3:30 a.m., Orland police officers were dispatched to 1309 Brookside Drive for another report of gunshots.

This time, the report was accurate.

Truck 29 announced that it was responding at 3:40 a.m.

The fire dispatcher in Corning said, “You are responding to 1309 Brookside Drive. Scene is secure for gunshot victim. Your medic unit was Westside, responding from Orland.”

Moments later, Truck 40 announced that it was also responding.

Due to heavy radio static, a law enforcement officer made a mostly unintelligible comment about finding “no vehicles” that may have recently left the scene of the shooting.

At 3:43 a.m., a volunteer on Truck 29 stated it had just arrived at the scene.

Truck 29 was back in quarters at 3:52 a.m. This was the 618th incident to which the Orland Volunteer Fire Department responded so far this year.

At about 4:15 a.m., Orland Police Officer Ryan Martindale told the Glenn County Sheriff’s dispatcher that he was on his way to Enloe Medical Center, presumably to conduct interviews and/or collect evidence.

Minutes later, Orland Police Officer Edgar Pinedo, who also responded to the shooting, went off duty.

Roughly 45 minutes after saying he was heading to Chico, Officer Martindale said he was returning to Orland.

No suspects’ names were given over the air on Sunday, and not even the name of the shooting victim was mentioned. A bullet, however, was recovered from the scene.

At 7:30 a.m., Officer Martindale went to a neighboring house on Brookside Drive, presumably to interview potential witnesses.

It is hoped that more information will be made available on Monday, Nov. 1.

Upon further investigation, Deputy Alves concluded that the vehicle Dowden was driving had not been in a collision with Aylward’s vehicle. Aylward refused any assistance and was uncooperative.
